click on slide shows. >> you have probably read one of his books or seen a movie based on one of his books. baltimore neighbor -- native tom clancy died on tuesday. for more on his life and career, we go to kim dacey live in federal hill. is survived by his wife, five children, and several grandchildren. he lived in maryland all his life and those who knew him are remembering him. a piece of steel. >> his books are wildly popular, selling tens of millions of copies around the world and author tom clancy died tuesday at the age of 66. >> he was a master storyteller. and one of the great storytellers of our time. or of any time. >> tom clancy was born in baltimore in 1947 to middle- class parents. his dad was a mailman. he graduated from oil of lakefield high school and went colleg.ya loyola

he got married and went into the insurance business. >> he was an insurance salesman and he had the temerity based on an english teacher at loyola high school, he had the temerity to think he could write. and so he put it together in a book. >> his first test seller "the hunt for red october" was published in 1984 and the rest as they say is history. his popularity skyrocketed but he continued to live in maryland and was known for keeping a low profile. >> he was a man of few words. ,e seemed every time i saw him at least in casual settings, he was always wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses. >> his friends saw a different side of him. clancy was like many of the heroes in his books. >> most of these heroes and certainly tom had this wonderful soft side and nobody ever heard about it.

on september 12. she remains in critical but stable condition. e is said to be armed and extremely dangerous. if you have information, contact metro crimestoppers. a dozen people are without a home after a partial building collapse in baltimore city. that happened around 730 p.m. last night on the dash in southwest baltimore. it was a vacant row home that started to crumble and it compromised the buildings on either side. no word on what caused the damage or how long it will take for residents to be allowed back inside. >> a police officer was involved in a deadly shooting this morning. it happened in cap attend at 2 a.m. someone called 911 reporting they heard a woman screaming for someone to get off her. when police arrived the male suspect tried to run. after brief chase the man and the officer were involved in some sort of confrontation which led the officer to open fire,

wing. we are still expect ed to hear the president tonight. chuck, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. i guess the good news is they are still talking in there. it is the four congressional the leaders -- speaker john boehner, nancy pelosi, mitch mcconnell and meeting in there. the staff are not in there. theet meetings in the past haven't led to a lot of breakthroughs when you have bipartisan bicameral. the president spoke with john harwood today. what was interesting in the interview, brian, is he had a bit of a warning to wall street about how the government shutdown is related to the debt ceiling issue that will hit in three weeks. take a listen. >> wall street has been calm about this. is that the right way to look at it? >> no. this time is different. they should be concerned. when you have a situation in which a faction is willing potentially to default on u.s.

the democrats. >> i am so ticked off at the tea party. >> reporter: on day two of the government shutdown, anger around the country rises as the impact spreads. at the national institutes of health outside washington, nearly three-quarters of the staff is on furlough. that means turning away about 200 patients a week for last resort medical treatment including 30 children, most of them cancer patients. the pain is being felt by more than just those who depend on government programs and federal employees. it is also affecting government contractors. josh and laura hail have five girls and zero pe pay. both are on furlough from wright patterson air force base. >> just because our paychecks stop doesn't mean bills stop. >> reporter: they are trying to recover from losing six days' pay each because of the sequester . >> even if we are reimbursed for time off, it's
